GirlsCode++ is a day-long camp to teach girls how to code
Cedar Rapids, IA – NewBoCo’s girls code camp, GirlsCode++, returns for a second year to teach middle and high school girls how to code on Saturday, April 22.
Up to 50 female students will get introduced to a day in the life of a woman in technology and build their first websites based on the DeltaV Code School curriculum.
“As a software developer, I’m used to being the only woman on a dev team or being one of two female speakers at a developer conference,” DeltaV Code School instructor Jessica Bertling said. “I’ve gotten used to it, but I don’t want that for our future females in technology. That’s why I’m excited to introduce the next generation to coding.”
Although computer science is one of the most in-demand industries, only 18% of those who graduate and enter the field are female.
“My work with NewBoCo is to bring computer science to every classroom by teaching teachers how to teach code through our Code.org partnership,” NewBoCo K-12 STEAM Coordinator Samantha Dahlby said. “I love that I also get to bring computer science directly to students with GirlsCode++.”
“We want to invest in our community, and it’s in our mission to build tech talent in Iowa and help develop our future workforce,” NewBoCo Director of Development Kaitlin Byers said. “It’s great to see that not only are we dedicated to exposing more females to computer science but so are other business leaders in the Corridor.”
The cost for GirlsCode++ is $50, half the price of a DeltaV 101 course; the cost includes a light breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt. Thanks to sponsors including Workiva, Converge, Imon, Pancheros, and Jonnie5 Apparel, need-based scholarships are available.
