CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) — Another historic property in the NewBo district of Cedar Rapids is about a month away from a restoration debut.

The “White Elephant” building was actually moved twice in the last two years as historic preservationists worked to save this old structure from the wrecking ball. The first move was to a temporary location until a final location was ready.

Beth DeBoom, one of the owners, says the project should wrap up by the end of November. And she sees a connection with her restoration project and the Ideal Social Hall opening next week.

“Two iconic buildings that have been brought back to life. That has to be a signal that people are going to start paying attention to this part of the neighborhood and hopefully investing a little more,” she said.

DeBoom says the upstairs portion of the restored retail building is intended as a bed and breakfast rental, and the downstairs will be a retail shop.
