Corridor Business Journal – A unique and historic former gas station has re-opened in Cedar Rapids’ NewBo area as Golden Hammer Collision’s estimating center.

The auto body repair facility, which already has a location at 5173 18th Ave. SW in Cedar Rapids, announced the opening of the facility last week. Located at 1390 Third St. SE just south of Brewhemia on the corner of Third Street and 16th Avenue, the company said the new building makes it the only body shop in Cedar Rapids to offer two locations.

“We freshened everything up and will be keeping the building as it was,” the company said on Facebook. “This is an estimating center, so no wear and tear will occur. People will be able to visit and experience the building as they did over 50 years ago. This was very important to us. Come on down and have a coffee.”

The attention-grabbing building began life as Zitek Skelly Service Station in 1939. Following the 2008 flood, it sat vacant for six years before the 780-square foot structure was restored to its former glory complete with tan brickwork, a vintage Skelly gas pump and a restored light pole. The building was previously home to Red Ball Printing, which moved to a larger location on C Street late last year.
