Cedar Rapids, IA – September 2018— “Room with a Brew” returns for its third year on September 21st, from 5pm-8pm in the Czech Village-New Bohemia Main Street District. Attendees will get a chance to experience what it’s like to live within walking distance of dining, shopping, and nightlife in Cedar Rapids. Five unique residences in the Main Street District will be open for tours as well as four local restaurants will be offering free tastings and food specials to give attendees the full experience of urban living. The proceeds from “Room with a Brew” will go right back into the community to support the ongoing revitalization of the Main Street District.
After checking in at Lion Bridge Brewery at 5:00pm to sign-in, attendees will receive their “Room with a Brew” guide map and signature cup. From there the experience is self-guided throughout the walkable district using the guide map as a passport to get in the designated dwelling options and sample the selected brews & appetizers.
A variety of urban living options are featured on this year’s tour. The Apartment above 99 16th Ave SW is unoccupied and available for rent. This was originally a US Bank office space above Arbuckles Tattoo Parlor. You will see the remnants of office space transformed into a Czech Village apartment.
An Apartment in Czech Village, on 16th St SW diagonal from the Czech Cottage, has a great view of the Czech Village happenings, and features original touches on the second floor of this neighborhood home.
Step back in time with a Gutted House on C St SW. After the flood of 2008 this house was cleaned out to bare bones and remains this way today. Serving as a time capsule 10 years after the 2008 Flood – this is your chance to see the way many homes and businesses in the area started from scratch a decade ago. Plans are in place to transform this location in the coming year. This house was also the original location of the National Czech and Slovak Museum.
Newly expanded Main Street District boundaries are the location for the other two “Room” locations:
An Apartment in the Adam Building, one of Oakhill Jackson Brickstones, is on the corner of 6th St and 12th Ave SE. These units feature modern touches and reserved garage space as well as a Community Room/Conference Room, modern laundry facilities, and private patios & balconies.
A Brand New AirBnb on 6th Ave shows how passionate Cedar Rapids is about preserving its heritage. This home was originally a few blocks away, and the last remaining home in the “Flats Neighborhood”. After moving to its current location in April, it has undergone renovations and will soon be available for visitors to stay and enjoy at a walkable distance to the Main Street District.
As for specialty brews and appetizers, “Room with a Brew” will showcase four of the district’s exceptional places to gather. Attendees will taste select brews at the following establishments:
At Lion Bridge Brewing Company attendees will sign in to begin the tour and enjoy a sampling of their local brews with appetizers to get the night started. The outdoor patio was funded in part by Main Street through an Open 4 Business Grant a few years ago. This building has hosted many businesses before it was a celebrated local brewery, including a grocery store.
Kickstand is a popular biking destination in the Main Street District right off the Cedar Valley Nature Trail. For “Room with a Brew,” Kickstand will be featuring a specialty brew from Thew Brewing Company as well as a delicious array of appetizers. This building was originally built as a gas station.
Parlor City Pub & Eatery features Cedar Rapids Historic Décor throughout its many dining rooms. For “Room with a Brew,” Parlor City will have a few brews to sample from their wide selection of beer. This building was originally built as a bank and has hosted many businesses before becoming a popular district dining location.
The final “Brew Location” was also built as a banking establishment. Chrome Horse Saloon NewBo will feature samples of their beer for “Room with a Brew,” as well as a sample three different appetizers. Chrome Horse Saloon is also a popular district location for live music; ViceBox will take the stage at 9:00pm after “Room with a Brew.”
This fundraising event concludes with attendees turning in their completed passport back at Lion Bridge Brewing Company by 8:00pm for a chance to win some wonderful local prizes. We anticipate an excited crowd ready to tour and sample the Czech Village – New Bohemia Main Street District!
Proceeds from the event further the mission of Czech Village-New Bohemia Main Street by providing Building Improvement Grants that encourage economic growth and promote preservation.
