More than 40 volunteers contribute over 2,000 volunteer hours each year to provide mission driven services, promotions, events, and programming focused on community development in the Czech Village/New Bohemia Main Street District. We’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you to a couple of our members.
Jessica Carney is a Cedar Rapids native who lives in the NewBo district and volunteers on the committee for the Main Street District event called “Room with a Brew”. She works at Coe College as the Associate Director of Programming where she plans and manages events related to admissions. In addition to volunteering with Czech Village/New Bohemia Main Street District, she also volunteers on the “Concerts at the Creek” committee at the Indian Creek Nature Center. She lives with her Husband, Devin Carney, and their dog Lucy.
When asked about living in NewBo, Jessica said, “I love living in a walkable neighborhood. I’m from Cedar Rapids, but I lived in Minneapolis for about three years where I was able to walk out my door and go to coffee shops, restaurants, and activities. Living in NewBo, I can walk to all the great business in the neighborhood or even walk downtown. My dog likes it too, she gets pet by lots of people when we are out and about. Her favorite place is the Great American Popcorn Company because she’s figured out that kids often drop their ice cream.”
Jessica became involved with Main Street through the event ‘Room with a Brew.’ She is looking forward to the 2017 event coming up in September. When asked about the downtown living tour, Jessica said, “Room with a Brew is such a fun, relaxed event that showcases housing options in Cedar Rapids that don’t involve living in a house and having to mow a yard, if that’s not your thing. Even if you have absolutely no interest in moving to the area, you get to walk around other people’s houses and check out how they live. Who isn’t curious about that? The brews from the great bars in the area don’t hurt either.”
